A Very Sweet Tsunami

Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea

The gentle sea breeze felt in Venice Film Festival a month ago (while Hurricane Gustav battered Cuba) has finally reached Bosphorus.

Hayao Miyazaki, the white-haired and wise-looking wizard behind such masterpieces like Spirited Away, has done it again.  Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea—his latest oeuvre released in Venice four years after his last one, Howl’s Moving Castle—is absurdly delightful.  (If you liked My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service, you’ll LOVE this).

The film tells the story of Ponyo, a mad ball of energy of a girl-fish with popping eyes, who befriends the five-year-old Susuke living with his mum, a care worker at an old people’s home.  Also in the ‘picture’ is Fujimoto, the evil magician who rules the sea.

Hearing the plot, don’t think that Miyazaki just does kids’ stuff.  As with his other work, in Ponyo he draws attention to climate catalysm, the litter of human garbage and waste under the sea, and the monstrous side effects of sea farming done by trawlers.  The best lecture (for young and not so young) coated with such enchantment and wit that no wonder it smashed Japanese box office records when released in July this year.
