Best Foot Forward
Yaya Pedestrians Charity
You know that a burger contains 260 calories—and that you need to walk 30 min, jog for 27 min, swim for 20 min to burn it. All for one *@%$ burger…
Meet Yaya, a charity that promotes walking to work, school and just about anywhere; and aims to create better streets for people on foot.
Set up by Barış Andırınlı and seven other like-minded urbanites who took up this most ancient form of exercise (the most advanced one being Wii Fit, in case you didn’t know), Yaya believes that Istanbul commuters face more stress than fighter pilots.
They want to tackle this situation by lobbying for safer streets without the war zone look—courtesy of never-ending roadworks—and have recently completed their first campaign to promote walking and cycling. They’re linked with Living Streets in UK, and are a member of International Federation of Pedestrians located in (where else?) Switzerland.
So, eat that hamburger and start walking to burn those caleries.
After all, every long journey begins with a single step.
