Bet With Caution

You shamefully remember the last time you tried to pull a magic trick in a bar—for a free beer.  Here’s what you do to avoid the same happening again.

Step 1: Go to Taps, the new brewery+restaurant opening tonight.
Step 2: Sit at the bar and take out a shuffled deck, while discreetly noting the bottom card.
Step 3: Have an innocent dude pick any card, note it and place it on top of the deck.  Have him cut the deck once or twice, which will place their card directly below the bottom card that you memorised.
Step 4: Start flipping over cards from the top of the deck, lining them face up.  When you see the card you initially memorised, the next card flipped will be his card.  Continue flipping a few cards past their card, then stop.
Step 5: Bet him a beer—one of the myriad of special ones that Taps serves; chocolate flavoured one included—that the next card you flip over will be his.  (Seeing his card already on the table, he’ll assume you’re continuing with the deck.  Wrong, wrong, wrong).  Once he agrees, flip his already exposed card onto his face.
Step 6: Celebrate.
