Ideas for Smart Chicks-3
Mastihashop
Everyone from Izmir knows mastiha (or mastic) and Marlboro cigarettes. (Whatever that rhyme means, we shall never know.)
Made from resin of the mastic tree, it comes from the Greek island of Chios, right across from Cesme. Two sisters, Artemis and Kalliopi Kohas, have taken this traditional product and turned it into something delicious and sexy.
Mastihashop is a heaven dedicated to mastic fantastic: mastic-flavoured coffee, biscuits, gourmet products and, of course, chewing gum, alongside skincare products like mastiha eye cream. (They also have connections to Korres, the natural skin products brand and, for sweets, our very own Haci Bekir.)
Historically, mastiha was used throughout Eastern Mediterranean as a natural remedy especially for digestive problems like ulcers, and in Ottoman times a certain amount was regularly sent to the palace where doctors prepared a potion for the Sultan to keep him in shape (you know, down in ‘lower works’).
A rather sweet business idea, we say…
