Photographer’s New Clothes
Juergen Teller Nürnberg Series
Saw the recent Marc Jacobs campaign? The one with Posh Spice inside a carrier bag, legs sprayed out.
The man who took them-world famous photographer Juergen Teller-is behind the camera in a new exhibition at Galerist called Nürnberg. Frustrated by the cry-baby models he pictures (‘I look too old/fat/ugly in this photo, Juergen’), he tried taking a picture of himself naked, just to get an idea of what it felt like being photographed.
Boy, he must have loved it; for this forty-something, mischievous ‘exhibitionist’ uncle with a dirty beard even managed to collaborate with the ice-hot Charlotte Rampling on a project (him:peeing in a pot, her: playing a grand piano). And Lily Cole became his most recent subject of a nude shoot. The results, which are also on show in this exhibition, are ethereal.
But his Nürnberg pictures are somewhat different: more arty and possessing an element of atonement. Being German, Teller always seemed to carry the burden of Nazi’s horrible past. The pictures show hope amid the ruins of war and the atrocities committed.
A real ‘kiss and Teller’. And not a naked soul in sight.
Juergen Teller’s Nürnberg series runs at Galerist between Sun., 11 May-Sat., 14 June. Istiklal Cad. Misir Apt. 311/4, Beyoglu. 0212.244 8230. galerist.com.tr.
