Unchanged Melody
Sounds of Istanbul
Remember the 80’s when you used to go to the local music shop and have your favourite mix of hits recorded on to a tape? (Think of Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ and Culture Club’s ‘Karma Chameleon’ with a bit of Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World’ thrown in).
Well, times have changed; but compilations, they did not.
The newest addition to the frenzy that is the ‘Istanbul lifestyle music’ is the album Sounds of Anjelique. Compiled by NR1 Music (headed by none other than Omer Karacan, the tunes in whose iPod you’d kill to download), it consists of 14 tracks of house, progressive and techno styles played at the iconic Bosphorus club Anjelique.
If you’re a laid-back type and prefer something more ‘loungey’, then check out The Ambience of Nisantasi and its predecessor Taxim/Beyoglu. They are sure to bring a smile on your face with mellow tunes like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Nip/Tuck’ theme songs among others.
Finally, for those staunch supporters of romantic Turkish music, there’s Istanbul Lounge by DJ Saka. It may be just the thing as a ‘present for self’ this Christmas.
All available on D&R and other good music and bookshops.
