Who Do You Think You Are?

Ebru Project

When traveling in a foreign country, it’s crucial to have the right attitude towards that thing called cultural diversity.  (It also helps to be able to say ‘Hello’ in, say, Jamaican patois; or ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here’ in Mandarin.)

Geneology is big time popular these days, so why not go one step further and explore your and other people’s roots?

Photographer Attila Durak did just that and the result is a brilliant project called ‘Ebru‘.  Scouring every corner of Turkey from Midyat in deep south to Edirne in the west, he talked, ate, laughed and cried with his subjects over seven years to learn their family history.

The book is a masterpiece celebrating colours and voices of many ethnic groups living in Turkey such as Kurds, Romany, Rum (Greeks), Assyrians, Cossak, Tajik, Pomak, even Polish.

Just don’t mispronounce ‘pukka’ as ‘putka‘ in the presence of a Bosnian, Bulgarian or any other Slavic friend, will ya?
