Wonder Girl

Hande Demiray Designs

Whatever happened to Right Said Fred and the shirt he was too sexy for?  And who remembers Vanilla Ice and his Ice Ice Baby?  Sometimes it takes more than magic to create a one hit wonder. (Or to reinvent an all-time popular one.  Who can forget It’s Raining Men by Weather Girls?)

A young Sydney-trained graphics designer, Hande Demiray, seems to have done just that.  As is the case with her designs for Hokka—an intriguing line of Istanbul memorobilia—seagulls, fish (or fishermen on the bridge) and cats often feature in her designs, alongside iconic Istanbul views like Galata Tower, ferry, mosques and churches.  Yet, being interpreted in a contemporary fashion, they’re far from the boring touristic stuff that’s been around for years.

Nothing escapes Hande’s well-trained eyes.  Get her Tulipgrinder, a stylish pepper grinder; or drool over her T-shirts with quirky illustrations like chicken crossing the road, or adorned with ironic messages like ‘Biz Ayrı Dünyaların İnsanlarıyız.’

These beer mats are definitely not for sticking under wobbly tables and chairs.
