Mtaär Art Space

Funny self-portraits.  Fairies made from dried out mushrooms.

You always have ideas for your artistic outpourings, but rarely the chance to show them off.

Mtaär, a new art space, which opens today with the inaugural Local Illustrators 01 exhibition, is one such breeding ground on Asian side and very much the opposite of Beyoğlu-Tünel-Karaköy scene.

Expect to see whimsical works by Erkin Gören and the incredibly funny Kaan Sezyum, as well as the ‘ladiez’ Ece (Kalabak), Gaye Su (Akyol), Ayça (Elkap).

Set up by Erkin and Sevil (Tunaboylu), the space runs on two floors: one for 2-and 3-D works, and the other for video and sound installations.  They plan to curate similar exhibitions and mini festivals to give a voice to indie artists and groups.

Thinking about nominating that painting of yours inspired by ‘Scream’—only that yours is worthy of MOBA (Museum of Bad Art)?

That’s where you draw the line.
Mtaär Art Space.  Şair Latifi Sok. 27/a Moda-Kadıköy.  mtaar.org.  Local Illustrators 01 runs between Sat., 9 May-Tue., 9 June.
