What Ottomans Did For Us

Mihrimah Sultan Café

In today’s lesson, we’ll talk about a very important character in Ottoman history.  Mihrimah Sultan was the daughter of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient—and a muse to the great architect Sinan, for whom he built a vast mosque.

That Ivanka Trump of the Ottoman court is also the inspiration behind Mihrimah Sultan Café.  Owned by the modern day Mihrimah and her sister Kübra, the café offers a daily-changing menu based on seasonal produce.

Go there on a hot day to enjoy the coolness of their garden and you’ll forget that you’re actually in Beyoğlu.  Order a Sultan’s Breakfast, washed down with a delicious syrup (strawberry, plum, tamarind or melon in summer; cranberry, pomegranete and orange in autumn), or their simply divine homemade lemonade.

Turkish coffee ground in stone mills is another specialty you’d be sorry to miss.  As is puffing your day away with a nargile on the side.

You’ll hardly notice the ‘mihr’ (sun) setting and the ‘mah’ (moon) coming out.
